NCR's Dundee plant could lose 252 jobs

• 12 Mar 2009

DUNDEE, Scotland — NCR Corp. has announced proposals to make 252 job reductions in Dundee, Scotland, in response to the global economic crunch.

According to a news release issued today, NCR has informed the staff of its plans to cease manufacturing of low-volume and high-complexity products at its Gourdie site. The company also proposes to reduce staff levels in engineering, solutions marketing and support functions.

"Like many companies, we have taken a number of prudent steps to better manage our cost structure in recent months," said Rick Marquardt, NCR's vice president of global manufacturing. "Based on the current business outlook, we now need to make the difficult but necessary decision of proposing further workforce reductions in Dundee, in order to protect our position. We realize that these changes will bring challenging times for those employees affected, and we are committed to helping any individuals affected with comprehensive outplacement support."

This is not the first hit to the Dundee plant. In January 2007, NCR cut 650 jobs in Dundee. The cuts were part of NCR's realignment strategy, which led to a global workforce reduction of 1,200 employees.

Regarding its most recent layoff proposal, NCR says it is has initiated a 90-day consultation process with union and employee groups in Dundee. Under the proposals, NCR's remaining business in Dundee will focus on engineering, research and development, services support, solutions management, marketing and new product introduction. Approximately 450 positions would remain.
